Shukkeien was created in 1620, during the early Edo period, by order of Ueda Sōko, a renowned samurai, tea master, and garden designer. The garden was constructed for Ueda Shigeyasu, a senior retainer of the Hiroshima domain, and became associated with Hiroshima Castle and the ruling Asano family.
The name Shukkeien Garden (縮景園) can be translated roughly as “shrunken scenery garden.” The idea was to recreate miniature versions of natural landscapes within a relatively small space. Mountains, valleys, forests, rivers, and lakes are represented through carefully arranged scenery, allowing visitors to experience a condensed version of Japan’s natural beauty in one garden.
