Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō) is one of the world’s most exciting cities, where futuristic technology, centuries-old traditions, incredible food, and endless entertainment all exist side by side. For many visitors, the experience begins before they even reach the city. Flying into Tokyo, especially Haneda, you can look out the window and see an almost endless urban landscape stretching all the way to the horizon. The sheer scale of it is incredible, with the city seemingly stretching forever. Tokyo began as the small fishing village of Edo before becoming Japan’s capital in 1868. Despite being devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and the Second World War, it rebuilt itself into the huge, modern city we see today. There is an incredible amount to discover, from the neon streets of Shibuya and Shinjuku, the electronics and anime culture of Akihabara, and the traditional temples of Asakusa, to the peaceful gardens, museums, markets, and countless neighbourhoods in between. Tokyo’s food scene is just as varied, from Michelin-starred restaurants to tiny ramen shops tucked away down side streets — and, if you look around, you can still find some excellent value. Despite its size, Tokyo is remarkably clean, safe, and easy to get around thanks to its extensive rail network. And while the city is undeniably modern, it is far from the concrete jungle many people imagine. Whether you come for the history, food, shopping, technology, nightlife, or to experience the sheer scale of the city, Tokyo has something for everyone.
