Beppu is Japan’s most famous hot spring city and one of the world’s great geothermal destinations. Driving into the city you can see steam rising from the thousands of mineral rich natural hot springs. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of bathing experiences, including traditional outdoor baths, sand baths, mud baths (not my favourite), and steam baths. The city’s famous “Hells of Beppu” are colourful geothermal pools that showcase the area’s volcanic activity. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming in this tourist town, with many visitors spending several days exploring different bathing facilities and wellness experiences.
