Winter Wonderland

Sapporo is the largest city in Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido and is famous for its winter scenery, excellent food, and outdoor activities. The city gained international recognition through the Winter Olympics and continues to attract visitors throughout the year. Winter brings the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival, where enormous snow and ice sculptures transform the city into a spectacular outdoor gallery. Skiers and snowboarders enjoy easy access to nearby resorts, while summer offers pleasant temperatures, flower fields, and outdoor festivals. I lived in Sapporo with my family for several years, it has a different atmosphere compared to the main island, almost a western feel to in some respects. Hokkaido is renowned for its seafood, ramen, dairy products, and local beer. You will be able to find fresh crab, sea urchin, scallops, and miso ramen at markets and restaurants throughout the city. The city’s wide streets, modern layout, and relaxed atmosphere distinguish it from many older Japanese cities, it has almost a western feel to it with its many wide streets and many colourful houses. Nearby attractions include the picturesque canal city of Otaru and numerous national parks featuring mountains, lakes, and hot springs. For travellers seeking a different side of Japan, Sapporo provides an appealing combination of urban comforts, outdoor adventure, and exceptional cuisine.
