Japan can be a hard place to navigate, from the lack of English and language and communication barriers to cultural and social hurdles! For many visitors from overseas, Japan can feel difficult and alien — from its history, culture, and traditions that aren’t always obvious to an outsider. We want to share the background, local insights, and the stories that shaped the places you want to visit — the attractions, towns, and cities — so that you can experience and appreciate Japan more like a travelling local, rather than an outsider, at a time when it seems like everyone is heading to Japan!
WHY WE STARTED
It started with a curiosity about Japan and a desire to understand more than what you see on the surface. The more we travelled, the more we realised that the places, traditions and everyday experiences we encountered often had stories and context that weren’t immediately obvious. Japan is known for its fascinating mix of ancient traditions and ultra-modern life, from temples and historic towns to neon cities, anime, food and technology. But there is so much more to its history and culture than the familiar images of samurai and geisha. Behind the famous sights are centuries of history, local stories, changing traditions and countless details that are easy to miss. This space is where we share those stories — the history, culture, people, places and little things that make Japan so interesting to explore.
