Kinkaku-ji Temple — Kyoto’s Golden Pavilion

Kinkaku-ji Temple (金閣寺), also known as the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto’s most recognisable sights. Standing beside the peaceful Kyōko-chi Mirror Pond, the temple’s brilliant gold exterior creates one of the most iconic views in Japan.
Located in northern Kyoto, Kinkaku-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site with centuries of history. While the Golden Pavilion itself is the main attraction, the surrounding gardens, pond and traditional architecture make the entire visit worthwhile.
The Golden Pavilion — Kyoto’s Most Iconic View
The first thing you’ll notice is the pavilion itself. The upper two floors are covered in gold leaf, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding greenery and the blue waters of Kyōko-chi Pond.
On a calm day, the pavilion is beautifully reflected in the water, creating the famous postcard-like view that has made Kinkaku-ji Temple one of Kyoto’s most photographed landmarks. The building also combines different architectural styles across its three floors, reflecting the culture of the Muromachi period.
Kinkaku-ji’s Incredible History
Kinkaku-ji began as a villa built in 1397 for Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate. After his death, the site was converted into a Zen Buddhist temple known as Rokuon-ji, although the Golden Pavilion became so famous that Kinkaku-ji became its better-known name.
The pavilion was destroyed by arson in 1950 and rebuilt in 1955, with the current structure closely reflecting the original design. Today, Kinkaku-ji Temple remains an important Zen temple and part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kinkaku-ji Gardens Through the Seasons
Although the Golden Pavilion is undoubtedly the star of the show, don’t rush away after taking your photograph. The temple grounds include a beautiful strolling garden, with ponds, streams, small islands and traditional features that create different views as you follow the walking route.
The gardens also make Kinkaku-ji worth visiting throughout the year. Spring greenery, summer foliage, autumn colours and winter snow can all dramatically change the scenery, with the gold of the pavilion creating a striking contrast against the surrounding landscape. Autumn is particularly beautiful, when the changing colours are reflected alongside the pavilion in the peaceful waters of Kyōko-chi Pond.
Keep an eye out for Sekka-tei, a traditional tea house, as well as Ryūmon-taki waterfall and other features connected with the history of the temple. The garden itself is designated as both a Special Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty.
