Nara Park & Todai-ji Temple — Ancient Nara and Its Famous Deer

Nara Park (奈良公園) and Tōdai-ji Temple (東大寺) offer one of Japan’s most memorable sightseeing experiences, combining incredible ancient architecture with hundreds of free-roaming deer in a relaxed, open setting.
For many visitors, the highlight is seeing the famous deer wandering through the park before walking beneath the enormous Nandaimon Gate and into Tōdai-ji, home to the spectacular Great Buddha (Daibutsu). Together, they offer a unique combination of Japanese history, Buddhist culture, nature and wildlife.
Nara was Japan’s capital during the Nara Period, and the area remains filled with historic temples, shrines and cultural treasures. Yet despite its incredible history, Nara has a noticeably slower and more relaxed atmosphere than nearby Kyoto and Osaka.
Nara’s Famous Free-Roaming Deer
The deer of Nara Park are probably the city’s most recognisable symbol. Around 1,200 deer roam throughout the park, with many approaching visitors in search of the special shika-senbei (deer crackers) sold around the area.
You may even see deer appearing to bow when asking for food, which has become one of Nara’s most famous visitor experiences. Just remember that these are still wild animals, so give them only the special deer crackers, avoid teasing them and keep an eye on young children around them.
The deer also have a fascinating connection with Nara’s religious history. According to local tradition, a deity arrived at nearby Kasuga Taisha on a white deer in AD 768, and deer subsequently became regarded as sacred messengers.
Todai-ji Temple — Home of the Great Buddha
After exploring the deer-filled park, make your way towards Tōdai-ji, one of Japan’s most impressive temples. The approach takes you through the enormous Nandaimon (Great Southern Gate), guarded by two towering Nio statues.
Beyond the gate stands the Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden), an enormous wooden structure containing the famous 15-metre-high bronze Great Buddha. The Buddha was completed in the 8th century and consecrated in 752, making Tōdai-ji one of the most important monuments of Japan’s Nara Period.
The scale of the building is incredible. The present Great Buddha Hall dates from the Edo period and is recognised by Tōdai-ji as the largest wooden structure in the world.
The Famous Pillar of Enlightenment
One of the more unusual experiences inside the Great Buddha Hall is a wooden pillar with a small hole near its base.
The opening is said to be roughly the same size as the Great Buddha’s nostril, and according to tradition, anyone who manages to squeeze through it will be granted enlightenment in their next life.
It’s particularly popular with children, although some adults have been known to give it a try too!
Todai-ji’s Incredible History
Tōdai-ji’s history stretches back to the 8th century, when Emperor Shōmu ordered the construction of the Great Buddha as part of an effort to promote peace and stability across Japan.
The Great Buddha was completed in 749, with its grand consecration ceremony held in 752. Tōdai-ji was later destroyed by fire in 1180 and 1567, with the present Great Buddha Hall rebuilt during the Edo period.
Today, Tōdai-ji is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains one of Japan’s most important Buddhist temples.
A Slower Side of Japan
One of the reasons travellers enjoy Nara is its peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. With open parkland, ancient temples, forested hills and wandering deer, it feels very different from Japan’s busier cities.
Beyond Tōdai-ji, you can also explore Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Kōfuku-ji Temple, Naramachi and the Nara National Museum, making Nara an easy place to spend a full day.
