Top 5 Beaches in Okinawa, Japan

Our Favourite Beaches

沖縄- Okinawa

Okinawa is where Japan meets the tropics, and it can feel like you’ve stepped into a completely different country. Think powdery white sand, brilliant turquoise water, swaying palms and spectacular sunsets — scenery that could easily rival Hawaii, Bali, Palawan or Phuket. These are genuinely world-class beaches, yet Okinawa is often overlooked by travellers visiting Japan.

What I love about Okinawa is how different it feels from the urban landscapes of Tokyo or Osaka. Instead of skyscrapers, packed trains and endless city streets, you’ll find tropical islands, beautiful coastlines, crystal-clear water and a much slower pace of life. It’s a side of Japan that many first-time visitors never get to experience.

The main challenge is getting there. Okinawa is geographically isolated from Japan’s main islands, so it usually requires a separate flight and a dedicated few days in your itinerary. But in my opinion, it’s absolutely worth the extra effort. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful hidden cove, a lively beach near restaurants and attractions, or somewhere to swim and snorkel, Okinawa has something for almost every traveller.

If you’re planning a Japan trip and have time to venture beyond the main islands, I’d strongly recommend adding Okinawa to your itinerary. And here are our top 5 beaches in Okinawa, in our opinion!

Emerald Beach – Perfect for Families

Located inside Ocean Expo Park beside the famous Churaumi Aquarium, Emerald Beach is one of northern Okinawa’s most attractive and accessible beaches. Its brilliant white sand contrasts beautifully with the sparkling blue-green water, creating the classic tropical Okinawa scene.

The calm, shallow water makes it particularly appealing for families, while the surrounding park provides plenty to see and do when you want a break from the beach.

Getting there: From Naha Airport, drive north via the Okinawa Expressway. Allow approximately two hours, depending on traffic.

Nearby dining: Explore the cafes and restaurants around Bise and Motobu for Okinawan dishes, seafood, coffee and tropical desserts.

Mission Beach – A Secluded Tropical Escape

If you’re searching for a quieter Okinawa beach, Mission Beach is a wonderful choice. Tucked away along the northern coast of Onna Village, this attractive stretch of sand has a relaxed, almost private-island atmosphere.

The combination of soft golden-white sand, lush greenery and clear blue water makes Mission Beach particularly photogenic. It is an excellent place to slow down, swim and enjoy Okinawa away from the busier resort beaches.

Getting there: From Naha Airport, take the Okinawa Expressway north and exit at Yaka IC. Continue towards Nago on Route 58 and follow the signs towards Mission Beach. The journey takes roughly 1½–2 hours depending on traffic.

Nearby dining: For a relaxed meal or coffee, try hale’aina HOA Okinawa or explore the restaurants and cafes further south along the Onna coast. Diamond Beach Cafe is another attractive option for a seaside coffee stop.

Manza Beach – Turquoise Water and Amazing Sunsets

Manza Beach is one of the classic resort beaches of Okinawa. Surrounded by dramatic coastal scenery and beautiful East China Sea views, it offers an inviting combination of soft sand and sparkling turquoise water.

Spend the day swimming or enjoying marine activities before staying for sunset. The surrounding Onna (恩納村) coastline is particularly beautiful as the afternoon light begins to turn the sea golden.

Getting there: Manza Beach is approximately one hour from Naha Airport by car and is easily incorporated into an Onna Village road trip.

Nearby dining: Onna has an excellent selection of restaurants. For a relaxed Hawaiian-style meal, try hale’aina HOA Okinawa, while Shimabutaya Onna is a popular option for a more substantial Okinawan dinner.

Sesoko Beach – Crystal-Clear Island Waters

Sesoko Beach delivers the feeling of a remote tropical island without the need to board a boat. Located on Sesoko Island near Motobu, it features wonderfully clear water, soft sand and panoramic views across the surrounding islands.

The beach is especially beautiful on sunny days when the shallow water takes on vivid shades of turquoise and sapphire blue.

Getting there: Drive across the Sesoko Bridge from mainland Okinawa. From Naha Airport, allow around 90 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

Nearby dining: Head back towards Motobu after your swim for local Okinawan restaurants, seafood and cafes. The area around the Churaumi Aquarium also provides plenty of choices for lunch.

Araha Beach – Beach Fun Near Chatan

Araha Beach is ideal if you want to combine a beautiful Okinawa beach with plenty of restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Located beside Araha Park, the beach has soft sand, inviting water and plenty of space for relaxing or enjoying beach activities.

Its location near Chatan also makes it particularly convenient for visitors staying around American Village. Come in the late afternoon and you can finish the day with a spectacular Okinawan sunset.

Getting there: Araha Beach is approximately 40 minutes from Naha Airport by car. It is also a short drive from central Chatan and American Village.

Nearby dining: Chatan and the surrounding area offer a huge choice of cafes and restaurants, making Araha an easy beach to combine with lunch, dinner or an evening out.
