道頓堀- Dotonbori
Few places capture the energy of Osaka quite like Dotonbori. Stretching along the Dotonbori Canal in the heart of the lively Minami district, it’s a dazzling mix of neon signs, giant shopfronts, restaurants, street food, entertainment and nightlife. Walking through the area after dark, with the lights reflecting across the canal and crowds filling the streets, really brings Osaka’s famously loud, lively and energetic personality to life.
For me, half the fun is simply wandering around and taking it all in. You’ll find the famous Glico Running Man, enormous food signs and colourful mascots, while the surrounding streets are packed with places to try Osaka favourites like takoyaki and okonomiyaki. The area is also within easy walking distance of Namba and Shinsaibashi, making it a great area to explore on foot.
Yes, it can be crowded and touristy, and some visitors find the main strip overpriced. But I still think it’s worth experiencing. Grab some street food, walk along the canal, take the obligatory Glico photo and explore the surrounding streets — it is one of those places that can be touristy and genuinely fun at the same time.
The Neon Heart of Osaka
As evening arrives, Dotonbori transforms into a sea of colourful lights and enormous advertising signs. The most famous is the Glico Running Man, which has overlooked Ebisubashi Bridge since the original sign was installed in 1935.
Walking beside the canal after dark is one of the best ways to experience Dotonbori. Giant signs, glowing storefronts, crowds, and reflections across the water create the unmistakable atmosphere that has made this one of Osaka’s most famous attractions.
Taste Osaka’s Famous Food
Dotonbori is at the heart of Osaka’s reputation as a food-loving city. The area is packed with restaurants and stalls serving some of the region’s best-known dishes.
Start with takoyaki, the famous octopus-filled batter balls that are a staple of Osaka street food. Then try okonomiyaki, a savoury Japanese pancake cooked with cabbage and a variety of toppings. You’ll also find ramen, sushi, kushikatsu, grilled seafood, udon, and countless other options.
With so much food packed into a relatively small area, it is the perfect place to embrace Osaka’s famous kuidaore (食い倒れ) spirit — enjoying food until you can barely eat another bite.
Beyond the Main Street
Although the main street attracts the biggest crowds, some of the area’s character can be found in the smaller streets and alleys nearby. Head away from the canal and you’ll discover izakaya, bars, traditional restaurants, and quieter corners that offer a different side of Osaka.
The nearby Hozenji Yokocho is particularly atmospheric, with narrow stone-paved lanes and traditional restaurants providing a contrast to the bright neon streets.
Dotonbori is also conveniently located near Namba and Shinsaibashi, making it easy to combine with shopping, nightlife, and other Osaka attractions.

Dotonbori is best experienced with an appetite and plenty of time to explore. Watch the neon signs illuminate the canal, take the classic photograph beneath the Glico Man, wander through the surrounding streets, and stop whenever something delicious catches your eye.
