Kiyomizu-dera Temple — Kyoto’s Iconic Temple on the Hill

Kiyomizu-dera Temple (清水寺) is one of Kyoto’s most famous temples and one of the most recognisable sights in Japan. Perched on the wooded slopes of Mt. Otowa, the temple is famous for its enormous wooden stage, panoramic views across Kyoto and the atmospheric historic streets leading up through the Higashiyama district.
The temple’s history stretches back more than 1,200 years, with its origins traditionally dating to 778. Kiyomizu-dera takes its name from the pure waters of Otowa Waterfall, which have attracted worshippers to the site for centuries.
But Kiyomizu-dera is more than just a temple building. From the famous wooden stage and seasonal mountain scenery to Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka and the traditional streets of Higashiyama, the journey to the temple is just as memorable as the destination itself.
The Famous Wooden Stage — Kiyomizu-dera’s Iconic Landmark
The highlight of Kiyomizu-dera Temple is undoubtedly its spectacular wooden stage, which extends out from the Main Hall high above the hillside. Standing around 13 metres above the ground, the stage offers sweeping views across Kyoto and the surrounding forest.
The structure is an impressive example of traditional Japanese construction. Built using a technique known as kake-zukuri, the stage is supported by a complex framework of wooden pillars and beams without using nails. The current Main Hall and stage date from the major reconstruction of 1633, making the structure an incredible survivor of Kyoto’s long history.
The view changes dramatically with the seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring to lush greenery in summer and vibrant autumn colours later in the year. Take your time on the stage and look beyond the temple itself — the view across Kyoto is a major part of the experience.
Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka — The Historic Road to Kiyomizu-dera
One of the best things about visiting Kiyomizu-dera Temple is that the experience begins well before you reach the temple. The traditional streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka climb towards Kiyomizu-dera, lined with old wooden buildings, souvenir shops, cafés, sweets and local crafts.
The stone-paved lanes are among Kyoto’s most atmospheric streets and offer plenty of opportunities to stop and explore along the way. Give yourself plenty of time for the walk rather than rushing straight to the temple — the approach is a big part of what makes Kiyomizu-dera special.
Kiyomizu-dera Through the Seasons
Kiyomizu-dera Temple is beautiful at any time of year, but the scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. Spring brings cherry blossoms, summer brings deep green forests, autumn covers the hillsides in brilliant colours, and winter creates a quieter atmosphere around the temple.
The elevated position of the temple makes it particularly rewarding for photography, with the wooden stage, surrounding forest and Kyoto skyline creating a different backdrop throughout the year. Special night viewings are also held during certain periods, allowing visitors to experience the temple after dark.
Kiyomizu-dera’s Incredible History
Kiyomizu-dera was founded in 778, making it more than 1,200 years old. According to temple tradition, the site began when the Buddhist priest Enchin discovered the sacred spring of Otowa and established a place of worship dedicated to Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion.
Over the centuries, much of Kiyomizu-dera Temple was destroyed by fire on numerous occasions, but the temple was repeatedly rebuilt thanks to the devotion of its worshippers. Most of the buildings you see today date from the major reconstruction of 1633, carried out under the patronage of Tokugawa Iemitsu.
Today, Kiyomizu-dera Temple forms part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving one of the city’s most important religious and cultural landmarks.
